The library's Thomas J. Aldred papers include a commonplace book of recipes and remedies. The other items in the collection were compiled between the 1820s and 1860s, so the commonplace book also may have been compiled during this time. Thomas Jefferson Aldred (1803-1880) was born in Brandywine Hundred, Delaware, and was a Chester County, Pennsylvania, farmer. According to online genealogical sources, his parents emigrated from England. He married Hannah Bonsall Fisher in 1826, and the couple had nine or ten children.
